Bulgaria, Romania to Sign EU Accession Treaties

Bulgaria and Romania will sign European Union (EU) entry accords paving the way to join the bloc in 2007.
The two countries' presidents and prime ministers will travel to Luxembourg to sign the EU accession treaty in the sidelines of a regular meeting of EU foreign ministers.
The two Balkan states will join the EU on January 1, 2007, provided they implement tough reforms to root out corruption, beef up border controls, strengthen judicial and administrative systems and upgrade rules on state aid to industry.
If they do not, their membership could be delayed until 2008, according to the 860-page treaty to be signed in Luxembourg by Bulgarian and Romanian leaders and the foreign ministers of the 25 EU nations.
The European Parliament approved April 13 the admission of both Balkan countries to the European Union, paving the way for the signature of EU accession treaty later this month.
On March 30, MEPs in the European Parliament's foreign affairs committee gave their backing to Bucharest and Sofia's accession in 2007. Accession negotiations with Bulgaria and Romania were completed on 17 December 2004 and Treaty of Accession is now finalised. |
